Interviews are a daunting but essential step to landing your dream job. You will have the opportunity to show your skills and figure out if the position is right for you. Here are some tips to overcome the pressure and nail your interview:

Before the Interview

1. Do your research
Learn as much as you can about the company you are interviewing for. When you have knowledge of the company, you can better express your interest. You should also determine how well you qualify for the job in advance, so that you can address any skills you lack. Let them know that you are still a viable candidate!

2. Prepare all your documents
Print out your resume, contact your references, compile samples of your work, and assemble your portfolio. Be sure to plan thoughtful questions for the interviewer that will demonstrate your interest in the position.

3. Practice
Practice answering common interview questions in the mirror or with a friend. The more you prepare, the more at ease you will feel when it’s the real deal.

On the Day of the Interview

1. Show up early
Plan to arrive 15 minutes early to ensure that you are on-time. Set aside your outfit and gather all your materials the day before to prevent rushing on the day of the interview. You should have copies of your resume, a portfolio of work samples (if necessary), a notebook, and a pen.

2. Communicate confidence and respect
Practice proper manners and positive body language. You can do this by sitting up straight, giving a firm handshake, and making eye contact. Listen carefully to the questions being asked of you, and maintain a pleasant attitude. Do NOT speak negatively about your previous employers.

3. Do your best
Be your authentic self. If you are truthful about who you are and your skillset, both you and your employer will discover if you are a good fit. When answering questions, relate your answers back to your strengths and accomplishments. And if you want the job, don’t be afraid to say so.

When the interview is all done, be sure to send a personalized note or email thanking your interviewers for their time and consideration. Though this isn’t required, it is a gracious act to show your appreciation. All in all, the key to interviewing is to show up prepared and practiced.
