Class registration can be intimidating even before adding the factor of different course levels. With the option of honors, AP, and regular, how do you choose? It’s a delicate balance figuring out how to challenge yourself without taking on more than you can handle. Here are some tips to finding your flow:

1. Strike a balance

No matter which levels you are choosing between, you want to make sure your schedule is manageable. If you’re earning high grades in your classes already, that’s an indicator that you should be pushing yourself. If you think that moving up a level might jeopardize your grades or mental health, consider staying in the lower level class. You want to strike a balance: classes where you push yourself and classes where you feel comfortable.

2. Talk to a teacher or school counselor

If you’re really unsure whether or not you’re ready to take your academics to the next level, ask for an opinion from your teacher or school counselor. They will also have insight on the process for your particular school. Some schools give all the authority to students when signing up for advanced classes. Other schools require a recommendation from a teacher or place students based off their grades from previous years. By communicating your goals, your teacher or counselor will be able to guide you in making a decision that fits your schedule and ability.

3. Start with your favorite subject

When signing up for more advanced classes, start with your favorite subject. We tend to enjoy the subjects that come easiest to us. Plus, if you are interested in the topic, you are more likely to retain information and reach a state of flow. “Flow state” is a concept in positive psychology that refers to the feeling of energized focus and full involvement in an activity. In other words, you have experienced flow any time you have ever felt “in the zone.”
