Knowing what to expect on the SAT can do wonders for your  focus on the day of the exam. Read on to learn more about the SAT test, and how you can best prepare.

How do I register for the SAT?

You can register on the College Board website. You will first create a free College Board account. Something else to consider: if you have previously taken AP or the PSAT, you may already have a College Board account. Be sure to pay close attention to registration deadlines because no one likes late fees!

When should I take the SAT?

To find the ideal time frame for you, plan ahead and assess your unique situation. The estimated time you should spend studying for your first SAT is around 100 hours. You also want to allow yourself the possibility for 2-4 attempts before submitting your applications.

Have you taken Algebra II, Geometry, or Trigonometry? Have you taken three years of science with one of those being physical science? These are concepts tested on the SAT, so it’s helpful to have exposure to them.

What else do you have going on in your life? If possible, schedule your SAT when your course load is lighter. There are 7 test dates per school year, so you have some options!

How many times should I take the SAT?

You should plan to take it at least twice with the ability to have a 3rd or 4th attempt if necessary. There is a feature called “score choice,” which allows you to pick and choose which scores are sent to colleges. Beware that some schools still require you to send all your scores, so do your best to make every attempt count. Other schools may want your “superscore” which is your best score in each section across test dates.

How much does the SAT cost?

The cost of taking the SAT changes from year to year, so check their website for updated information on pricing. Take a look at the fee waiver requirements here to see if you qualify.
