Student Spotlight: Vanessa @ State University of New York at Albany

Meet Vanessa, a junior at State University of New York at Albany in Albany, NY. She previously attended Port Chester High School.

What factors were most important when you decided to go to your school?

The school's population, campus, diversity, and location.

In high school, I wish I could have tried...

studying more and putting more effort into my academics.

How would you characterize your school?

Mainstream, Sporty, Liberal, Outdoorsy

What types of clubs, activities, sports, jobs, etc. are you involved with on-campus?

-Marching and Pep Band
-Working with New Student Programs- in charge of orientation and making programs for students at the university.
-Working with the Residential Life Department- Resident Assistant

Three things you won't read in your school's brochure:
  1. There is always something to do on campus. Every night, the Campus Center has a movie playing. Everyone is always playing pool, ping pong, or just hanging out.

  2. Even though there are so many students at the school it still feels like you know everyone.

  3. University at Albany's history and the reason it is what it is now is really interesting. The 518 Market that we have is one of the most visited markets in NY. A cool fact is that our uptown campus blueprints were originally meant to be for a school in Arizona but they ended up in Albany, which is why we have so many wind tunnels.

Best on-campus event:

Basketball games

Favorite class:

General Chemistry I

Favorite dining hall meal:

Buffalo chicken with mashed potatoes

Favorite place to eat out around campus:

How did you spend your last summer?

Working for New Student Programs as an Orientation Assistant with the families of the new incoming students.

It’s 3 am on a Saturday. What are you doing?

Chilling in my room watching a movie or playing video games with friends.

It’s finals week and the libraries are packed. Where do you go to study?

A study lounge in my hall or to a different floor where I don't know anyone so I don't get distracted.

Before I graduate, I want to… as involved as possible with the university and still maintain great grades and great friends
